Dayajoti led a stimulating evening on the theme of the bodhisattva in the twenty-first century, emphasising wisdom’s role in the compassionate response to the suffering in the world. We were asked to consider and discuss three ways of responding to that suffering, drawn from Joanna Macy’s ‘Work that Reconnects;’ direct action, working on alternative models, and working towards a shift in consciousness. This led to a thought-provoking discussion about this model and our responses and biases, which made this a very effective and powerful start to the Buddhist Action Month, and personally I feel motivated to take some actions.
